Quick answers about PDF Wire. For step-by-step instructions, see Help.
Is PDF Wire free?
Yes. It’s free to use and open source under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0.
Do I need to install anything or create an account?
No. It runs in a current web browser, with no sign-up.
Are my documents uploaded?
No. PDF Wire reads and writes PDFs inside your browser, and your files stay on your device. See the privacy notice.
Will my PDF meet WCAG 2.2 AA and PDF/UA?
PDF Wire is built to produce conformant files. Every export must pass its automated checks, and the file is checked again after it’s built. Some requirements need human judgement, such as whether alternative text is accurate, and the editor reminds you to check those. For important documents, we also recommend a second check with veraPDF or PAC.
Can I fix an existing PDF?
Not yet. You can check an existing PDF and get a report of its problems. Editing existing PDFs is on the roadmap.
Can I convert a Word document?
Not directly yet. For now, copy your text into PDF Wire and add headings, lists, images and tables with the Insert toolbar.
Which fonts can I use?
Twenty built-in families, including Atkinson Hyperlegible Next, Inter, Literata and Noto. They’re embedded in your PDF so it looks the same everywhere. See the full list.
Why can’t I export?
The checks panel lists what still needs fixing. Select each problem to go straight to it. Once there are no errors, export is available.
What is a .pwj file?
A PDF Wire draft. It saves your document so you can carry on later or share it with a colleague. It’s plain JSON, and the format is documented on GitHub.
Does it work with screen readers?
It’s designed to work with screen readers such as NVDA, JAWS and VoiceOver, and with a keyboard alone. If something doesn’t work for you, please tell us.
Which languages are supported?
You can set the document language to English, Irish, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Portuguese or Dutch. The built-in fonts cover Latin-based alphabets.
